Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy and its application in the pharmaceutical market

Abstract

Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS),based on atomic emission spectrometry and laser plasma emission spectroscopy,is a developing technique which can be used for rapid and on-site qualitative and quantitative analysis of elements in different samples. In this paper,the history,basic principle,apparatus, advantages and shortcomings of LIBS are discussed and its applications in the pharmaceutical industry are reviewed with special examples. It is concluded that LIBS technology is fast and convenient,and the authenticity of drugs can be identified quickly. It is conducive to the quality supervision of drug market and its applications in pharmaceutical analysis will be broader.
