Abstract

New psychoactive substances (NPS) are substances not controlled by international drug conventions, but exist for abusing and may pose a threat to public health. NPS in biological materials are normally quickly screened by immunoassay, and confirmed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry or liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Currently, biological materials include blood, urine, saliva, vitreous humor, hair, viscera and so on. It has been shown that NPS components can also be detected in meconium, dried blood, urine and saliva spots. The selection of biological samples is evolving towards easy access and preservation. In order to provide references for the selection of suitable biological materials, this paper reviews the advantages and disadvantages of different biological samples and their applications in NPS analysis.
