Objective:To explore the pharmacognostical identification study for the three medicinal seeds from the Cuscuta genus( Fam. Convolvulaceae), and to establish the standards of the macroscopic, microscopic identification and digital characterization for the authentication study of Cuscutae Semen and its adulterants. Methods:Referring to the terms and research methods of botanical morphological identification and classification, the comparative identification and digital characterization of three medicinal seeds from the Cuscuta genus were carried out by means of stereo microscope, optical microscope and digital imaging technology from the aspects of front, side, abdomen, surface appearance, cross section and longitudinal section characteristics, as well as the microscopic characteristics of cross section and powder. Then, the digital information was input to the digital specimen platform. Results:The macroscopic identification characters, such as the appearance, the ventral ridge, and the hilum, et al, and microscopic identification characters, such as the epidermis cell and the palisade cell of testa, of the medicinal seeds derived from Cuscuta australis R. Br., Cuscuta chinensis Lam., and Cuscuta japonica Choisy were clarified, and the identification methods were summarized, so as to provide reference for the identification of Cuscuta and its adulterants. Conclusion:The identification method is simple, environmental friendly, accurate and reliable, and can be used as the identification basis of the three medicinal seeds from the Cuscuta genus.
